6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies , whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable,improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9 Don't take guilt trips . Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10.Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Do you know your rights if stopped by the police?
There has been an increase recently in the amount of foreigners being stopped by police for no other reason than for being a foreigner. The following information is courtesy of Dave Aldwinkle and has been edited. The complete article can be found at www.debito.org INSTANT CHECKPOINTS IN JAPAN Subtitle: What you can legally do to protect yourself if the police decide to spot-check your Gaijin Card. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to: EXERCISE YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS Don't misunderstand my motives. I am not advocating anarchy, and I am not saying that you should not cooperate in a police investigation of a specific crime. But the police have to know that they cannot see foreigners as suspect just because they are foreigners. It reduces our standard of living by making us publicly and legally vulnerable in a way that hardly any Japanese have to or will put up with. For example, let's say you are on the street (or in Haneda Airport, for that matter, since as long as you are not in the office (jimusho) of the police, the law protecting our rights applies), and a policeman comes up to you and asks you for your Gaijin Card. If you do not wish to show it because the cop is being nasty or obstructionist, here's what you can do: Print out the following information and show it to them. 警察官職務執行法　第二条　警察官は、異常な挙動その他周囲の事情から合理的に判断して何らかの犯罪を犯し、若しくは犯そうとしていると疑うに足りる相当な理由のある者又は既に行われた犯罪について、若しくは犯罪が行われようとしていることについて知っていると認められる者を停止させて質問することができる。 In Romaji: Keisatsukan Shokumu Shikkou Hou, Dai Ni Jou Keisatsukan wa, ijou na kyodou sonota shuui no jijou kara gouriteki ni handan shite naniraka no hanzai o okashi, moshikuwa okasou to shiteiru to utagau ni tariru soutou na riyuu ga aru mono mata wa sudeni okonowareta hanzai ni tsuite, moshikuwa hanzai ga okonawareyou to shiteiru koto ni tsuite shitteiru to mitomerareru mono o teishi sasete shitumon suru koto ga dekiru. the name of the law: "Keisatsukan Shokumu Shikkou Hou"and a key concept: "Kyodou Fushin Sha" 挙動不審者--"A person of suspicious conduct "Which means, after you present them with the law requiring specific suspicion, you can say: YOU: According to the KSS Law, only suspicious characters can be questioned. Excuse me, but specifically what am I doing that is so suspicious? (In Romaji: Keisatsukan Shokumu Shikkou Hou ni yorimasu to, kyodou fushinsha dake ni shokumu shitsumon suru koto ga dekimasu. Sumimasen ga, gutaiteki ni donna fushin na koui o shiteimasu ka. (In Japanese: 警察官職務執行法によりますと、挙動不審者だけに職務質問することができます。すみませんが、具体的にどんな不審な行為をしていますか。) "The Foreign Registry Law, Section 13, Clause 3. Public officials governed by the previous clause, if asking for the Gaijin Card outside of their workplace, must carry a certificate of their identity and present it if asked." Let that resonate for a minute. This means that unless a cop shows you his ID, you have no proof that this is an authorized official that you have to submit to. He, according to the law, MUST submit if you ask him to submit while you and he are outside of his workplace. But the beneficial side effect is that you now have a legitimate way to find out his name, his police number, and whatever other information you need to hold him accountable should some abuse of the law occur. Take the time to write this information down in your notebook. 外国人登録法　第十三条　第三項　前項に規定する職員は、その事務所以外の場所において登録証明書の提示を求める場合には、その身分を示す証票を携帯し、請求があるときは、これを提示しなければならない。 In Romaji: gaikokujin tourokuhou dai juusan jou dai san kou zenkou ni kitei suru shokuin wa, sono jimusho igai no basho ni oite touroku shoumesho no keiji o motomeru baai ni wa, sono mibun o shimesu shouhyou o keitai shi, seikyuu ga aru toki wa, kore o keiji shinakerebanaranai. "Unless there is a regulation relating to criminal action, officials may not confine, bring back to any police administration area, or else coerce a person to reply to questions against his will." This is pretty straightforward and deserves to be known about. So if the policeman demands in public that you come with him to another area, like a separate room at Haneda Airport for questioning, refuse. Print up and pull out this law:警察官職務執行法　第二条　第二項　その場で前項の質問をすることが本人に対して不利であり、又は交通の妨害になると認められる場合においては、質問するため、その者に附近の警察署、派出所又は駐在所に同行することを求めることができる。警察官職務執行法　第二条　第三項　前二項に規定する者は、刑事訴訟に関する法律の規定によらない限り、身柄を拘束され、又はその意に反して警察署、派出所若しくは駐在所に連行され、若しくは答弁を強要されることはない。 In Romaji: Keisatsukan Shokumu Shikkou Hou, Dai Ni Jou, Dai Ni Kou, sono ba de zenkou no shitsumon o suru koto ga honnin ni taishite furi de ari, mata wa koutsuu no bougai ni naru to mitomerareru baai ni oite wa, shitsumon suru tame, sono mono ni fukin no keisatsusho, hashussho mata wa chuuzaisho ni doukou suru koto o motomeru koto ga dekiru. Anyone interested in fast CARS or fast BIKES should get out to AUTO POLIS. Located in the beautiful country side of Nakatsue about 1 hours drive from Hita in Oita Ken near the border of Kumamoto. You can get there easily from Hita I.C (60min) or Kumamoto I.C (75min) depending on the traffic. Auto Polis is very well set up and easy for spectators to find places to watch the action. You can take a blanket and sit on a grassy hill over looking the action or even just park in your car. Those looking to get a birds eye view can go to the third level of the Grand stand and watch the action from there. Anyone interested in going to watch the action should contact KN.admin.

New Year Plans or Resolutions- Bungy Jumping or Sky diving. As the New Year approaches it is time to think about where to go to celebrate the new year. In Japan it is normally a family event but for most foreigners it's a time to party with friends, associates and strangers. It's also a time to make your resolutions for the coming year. Many people choose common resolutions like, to save more money, quit somoking, cut down on drinking, loose weight, go to the gym more often, do more sightseeing and less clubbing (a popular one amongst 3rd year Jets and foreigners planning on leaving Japan).

Many people consider this to be the silly season time (Nematsunenshi) in Japan. Many people travel from where they are living and working back towards their home town (U-TURN).
Traffic jams on Highways are up to 30 Klm. Many train stations have lines of people up to 5 metres deep. Everywhere is busy busy busy. Especially the department stores with their after New Year lucky bag (fukubukuro)sales. It's also the time to visit shrines and temples (Hatsumoude)and pray for good luck like getting married, having children, passing high school or university exams. Some shrines have waiting lines of up to 3 hours.
It's also the time for fans, photographers and autograph hunters to wait at Narita airport trying to catch a glimpse, take a picture or get an autograph of famous Japanese celebrities returning from their overseas holidays.

Two of the most popular destinations are Hawaii and Australia.

Hanami at Kokura Castle
Last Saturday (April 9th 2006) we went to Kokura castle to follow the Japanese tradition of "watching the cherry blossoms". This tradition is always accompanied by lots of beer and other drinks and snacks. We had a small barbeque with us that we put to good use. Pictures say of course read more ?

Want to do something to help slow down and stop global warming? Here is a list of 10 very easy ways you can help to stop global warming. Each point also has the amount of carbon dioxide you can help prevent 1. Change a light. Use fluorescent light bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. If you change 6 regular bulbs with fluorescent bulbs you can reduce carbon dioxide by about 400kg per year. 2. Less driving and more exercising. Leave the car at home and walk, bike or use public transport. You can save about 1.5 kg of carbon dioxide for every 5km that you dont drive. 3. Recycle more. Recycling just half your household waste will reduce carbon dioxide by 1000 kg per year. 4. Correct Tyre inflation. If you must use your car then make sure your tyres are correctly inflated to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide by 2.5 kg per litre of petrol. 5. Use less hot water. Reduce carbon dioxide by nearly 225kg per year when you use cold water to wash your clothes instead of hot water. 6. Less packaging. You can save 545kg of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%. Buy items with less packaging. Reduce the amount of packaging by 10% and save 545 kg of carbon dioxide per year. 7. Change your thermostat settings. Increasing your settings by 2 degrees in summer and reducing by 2 degrees in winter could save up to 900 kg of carbon dioxide per year. 8. Plant trees. Every tree you plant can absorb up to one tonne of carbon dioxide over its life time. 9. Turn off electrical devices. How often do you leave your computer, DVD, stero or television on whilst during something else? Turn them off when not using them and save thousands of kilograms of carbon dioxide per year. 10.
